Do you remember when Channing Tatum was just a cute face in Step Up? Well, both Tatum and the Step Up franchise have grown up and moved on to bigger and better things. Well, at least Tatum did. Step Up Revolution is the forth movie in the series and features a completely new cast.
In this edition of the Step Up series, we are introduced to a group, known on YouTube as The Mob, who is trying to win $100,000 by being the first channel to reach 10,000,000 views. That's the overall plot in a nutshell. There is an additional storyline, but I don't want to spoil the film for those that are going to see it for more than the dancing. I will say that a celebrity fan base helps reel in those views through cameos.
I felt some of the special effects were too much for a group of twenty-somethings choreographing in a garage. It seemed more like something out of a movie. Go figure, right? As expected from a Step Up film, the dancing was incredible with some Parkour stunts thrown in. Additionally in common with past films in the series, each dance gets better than the previous. The soundtrack included tracks ranging from clubbing to salsa.
My personal opinion of this film is that anyone going to see the dancing will be blown away. If, however, you are going for a storyline or romance, this might not be the right movie for you. The screening I attended was in 3D but it didn't feel worth the extra $3. The most 3D that I was able to notice was cheap parlor tricks just to show off the technology.
Step Up Revolution will be released nation wide on July 27, 2012. Fandango is still running their $2 Amazon.com MP3 promotion when you buy tickets.
