Shared Reading: Downsized Products

.

Some companies have been raising their prices without your knowledge. They do this by keeping the price the same, but shrinking the package. Wallet Pop has exposed just a few of the companies that have done this recently. Here are three which I found interesting.

Kraft American cheese
Old: 24 slices
New: 22 slices

Häagen-Dazs ice cream
Old: 16 oz.
New: 14 oz.

Kirkland Signature (Costco) paper towels
Old: 96.2 sq. ft.
New: 85 sq. ft.

One tip that I would like to let everyone know is to compare the unit price. Many grocery stores will actually put it directly on the shelf sticker. For example, this price tag for Cheerios shows that the box costs $0.263 per ounce.  That store will most likely list all cereals by ounces allowing you to quickly see if you are truly saving money on larger boxes or store brands.
