I mentioned spirit day last year in passing, but it seems to have become an annual thing. Tomorrow, October 20, 2011, please consider wearing purple in memory of those youths that felt suicide was the only option to avoid the harassment they were subjected to by their peers. You can make a difference, and all it really takes is a kind word and a smile.
While spirit day is targeted mainly towards LGBT bullying, it can be so much more. The fat kid, the poor kid, the small kid. Many children are bullied because their classmates think it's funny. They see it all the time on tv and in the movies but don't realize the true impact of their tormenting.
This young boy below, Jamey Rodemeyer, was 14 when he committed suicide last month. According to an interview on The Today Show with his parents, the night of his funeral was the homecoming dance and students continued to insult him when a Lady Gaga song came on and they cheered that he was better off dead and that they were glad he was gone.
Show your support for victims of bullying by wearing purple tomorrow. Together, we can make a difference.
