Get Your Flu Shot At MinuteClinic (CVS)

It's that time of year again. The leaves are turning colors and the people around you are beginning to cough and sneeze. I am not a medical provider so I can't say if one source of a flu shot is better than another. I also can't make any claims that guarantee a flu shot will keep you healthy. Normally I go to my doctor in October to get my annual flu shot. This year, I got my flu shot from the MinuteClinic inside my local CVS store.

When I go to the doctor I must first make an appointment and then often spend some time sitting in the waiting room before being taken back. I love my doctor, but for something simple like a flu shot, MinuteClinic was much more convenient. I stopped into CVS after work and after signing in on a touch screen, I answered a few screener questions which made sure I met the health qualifications (no allergies to the flu shot, correct age range, etc.) for the shot. Within minutes, a nurse came out and called me in. She confirmed my identity and asked if I had any questions regarding the screener or if I needed to clarify anything before having the vaccination. In total I spent less than 30 minutes at CVS, and that includes shopping with my 20% savings pass I received after my vaccination.

I thought that the MinuteClinic really lived up to its name because it literally only took a few minutes. This might not always be the case though because the nature of medical providers. At more popular times, or during a medical emergency you might need to wait longer. You can check on their website for a full list of medical services provided at MinuteClinic.

MinuteClinic locations accept insurance but they also provide preventative medical care if you don't have insurance. Often times they are lower in cost than going to a doctor. Some insurance companies cover the cost of the entire flu shot, while others might have you pay a small fee. If you have insurance, please check with your provider for full details and coverage.

What should I do to prepare for this flu season?
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.

Where can I get a flu vaccine?
Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers, and even in some schools. Even if you don’t have a regular doctor or nurse, you can get a flu vaccine somewhere else, like a health department, pharmacy, urgent care clinic, and often your school, college health center, or work.

NYSC Offers People a Place to Shower and Recharge During Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

If you are currently powerless because of Hurricane Sandy, NYSC wants to help. The article my sister forwarded to me states that from now until November 14, 2012, non-members can use the facilities at NYSC locations. Weither you need a shower, a charge, or just a place to get out the stress, they want to welcome you in. I went to the official NYSC website and there the invitation was right on their homepage.

Our doors are open to help anyone impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

All of our clubs are opening their doors to Hurricane Sandy victims allowing full use of our facilities. If you need to take a hot shower, charge your cell phone, or recharge your body with a stress-reducing workout, our club is your club. All we ask is that nonmembers bring a towel. (Source: NYSC Website)

In my opinion, this is a great business move. NYSC is showing goodwill to their neighbors and some people that come in might end up joining the club.

Sponsored: Learn About Rosacea

Since I was younger, I have suffered from what my classmates affectionately referred to as clown checks. Besides the visual symptoms, I have always suffered from sensitive skin that can't deal with most brands of cleansers or makeup.

When I saw the opportunity to interview a celebrity dermatologist for Making Cents of It, I thought it was a wonderful opportunity. Dr. Hilary Baldwin is a sweet dermatologist from Brooklyn who was full of useful information for anyone that suffers from rosacea. Check out my interview below. If you have questions for Dr. Baldwin (or possibility a different dermatologist) tweet with the hashtag #rosaceafacts. If you have rosacia, know that you are not alone and talk to your doctor.

Disclaimer: I interviewed Dr. Baldwin during the BlogHer'12 conference. The interview was arranged by RosaceaFacts.com, who provided me with two gift bags (one for myself and one for a reader). A giveaway will begin soon as its own post. Please check with your own doctor if you believe you have rosacea.

20% Off Replay Watch and Step Pedometers

S2H wants to help motivate you to keep your new year resolutions. Using the promotional code S2H12 you will get 20% off your entire purchase. You can buy the Replay watch which gives you points for every two hours of motion or the Step pedometer which gives you points for every 10,000 steps. Redeem your points for some great prizes that include gift cards to major retailers.

For more information about S2H, refer to my original review of the Replay watch. I do not own the Step to review, but I think I'm going to buy one with this 20% discount.

Remember the S2H Watch?

Remember when I wrote a review for the S2H watch? Well S2H is getting so popular that even Dr. Oz is talking about them.

S2H is a great product that helps you earn rewards for staying healthy. For every hour the watch senses movement, you will get a code to enter on the website to redeem for prizes.

Now they added a new option. Instead of a watch that senses motion, you can purchase a pedometer called Step which produces a code for every 10,000 steps.

The only downside to S2H is that you may only upload one code per day. So if you are the type to play two hours of football in the park on a Saturday but not be active the rest of the week, you can only enter one code that Saturday.

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cafe Well for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Cafe Well is a new website I learned about today that is trying to combine social networking with healthy living.  Cafe Well is free to join so I joined the site today to explore what they offer.  So far I have seen some really interesting things.  I like the idea of challenges.  When you join a challenge, you are connected to other people participating in the same challenge.  All members in the challenge can communicate and support each other so that you all succeed.
If you’re a member of HealthAmerica, you may be able to join The Race to the Moon program! Click below to see if you are eligible to register for the program. If you are, you have the opportunity to order a wireless pedometer and have the chance to win great prizes.
I'm not a member of HealthAmerica so I can't be sure what exactly it is, but I can tell you what I see about Race to the Moon.  It looks like an incentive program over the social aspect of Cafe Well.  Besides helping each other get healthy, you'll also compete for prizes.

Cafe Well takes a bit of exploring to find something that will interest you.  When I first looked at the site, I wasn't sure if I'd find something interesting, but I kept looking before writing my review.  They have discussion groups for most major health issues.  You'll be able to connect with people like you to trade secrets to getting healthy.  Users can also create blogs to share progress, tips, and more.

One of the cool ways to connect is to create your own challenge for people to join.  If I was to create a challenge, it would be eating healthy without paying a fortune.  Does anyone else notice it's always the junk food that has coupons and the healthy food that keeps raising prices?

Donate Blood and Get Free Best Buy Rewards

I learned about an interesting website tonight. After you donate blood, head over to Red Cross Racing and record your donation. Each donation will earn you points which you can redeem for prizes. A whole blood donation will earn you a $10 Best Buy reward check. Just for registering for the website you'll earn enough points to redeem a $5 Best Buy reward check.
To exchange your Red Cross Racing Donor Rewards Points (“points”) into Best Buy Reward Zone program points (“Reward Zone Points”), you must (1) be (or become) a Reward Zone program member and activate your membership on MyRZ.com (2) log on to your Donor Rewards Membership Account at redcrossracing.com, access Reward Zone points in the prize catalog, and provide your Reward Zone program member number.

I'm not sure if this site will only allow you to claim donations made to the Red Cross, so if your area uses a different organization for blood donations you might not be able to redeem prizes. Also, the site itself runs very slow so you will need patients. Unless it's just my computer in which case you will have no problems redeeming.

Update: A reader on our Facebook determined that the site works better with IE instead of Firefox. So if it's not working, change your browser and try again.

Free NYC Taxi Rides Today Only

Dr. Oz is advertising his new time slot by offering New Yorkers a way to cut down on their after work stress today (May 26, 2011) in New York City. Just look for one of more than 400 Dr. Oz topped taxies and you will be taken anywhere in New York City (airports excluded) for free. That's right, free taxi rides in NYC. The free promotion will be running from 4-6pm, just in time for the rush hour commute.
The cabs will leave from various staging areas in Manhattan, including major points such as Grand Central, Penn Station, Rockefeller Center, the Flatiron Building, Columbus Circle, Bloomingdales, and in Harlem at St. Nicholas between West 125th and 126th Streets. At three of these posts – Grand Central, Rockefeller Center and Harlem – commuters will even have the opportunity to have their blood pressure taken, checking the pulse of what a real New York City rush hour does to the body.

If you haven't already, Dr. Oz also is currently offering an online health screening called real age which tells you how old your body is based on health. It's kind of cool and scary at the same time.
