Get Your Flu Shot At MinuteClinic (CVS)

It's that time of year again. The leaves are turning colors and the people around you are beginning to cough and sneeze. I am not a medical provider so I can't say if one source of a flu shot is better than another. I also can't make any claims that guarantee a flu shot will keep you healthy. Normally I go to my doctor in October to get my annual flu shot. This year, I got my flu shot from the MinuteClinic inside my local CVS store.
When I go to the doctor I must first make an appointment and then often spend some time sitting in the waiting room before being taken back. I love my doctor, but for something simple like a flu shot, MinuteClinic was much more convenient. I stopped into CVS after work and after signing in on a touch screen, I answered a few screener questions which made sure I met the health qualifications (no allergies to the flu shot, correct age range, etc.) for the shot. Within minutes, a nurse came out and called me in. She confirmed my identity and asked if I had any questions regarding the screener or if I needed to clarify anything before having the vaccination. In total I spent less than 30 minutes at CVS, and that includes shopping with my 20% savings pass I received after my vaccination.
I thought that the MinuteClinic really lived up to its name because it literally only took a few minutes. This might not always be the case though because the nature of medical providers. At more popular times, or during a medical emergency you might need to wait longer. You can check on their website for a full list of medical services provided at MinuteClinic.
MinuteClinic locations accept insurance but they also provide preventative medical care if you don't have insurance. Often times they are lower in cost than going to a doctor. Some insurance companies cover the cost of the entire flu shot, while others might have you pay a small fee. If you have insurance, please check with your provider for full details and coverage.
What should I do to prepare for this flu season?
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.
Where can I get a flu vaccine?
Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers, and even in some schools. Even if you don’t have a regular doctor or nurse, you can get a flu vaccine somewhere else, like a health department, pharmacy, urgent care clinic, and often your school, college health center, or work.

Disclaimer: I received a free flu shot in exchange for this post. It did not effect my review of MinuteClinic. All opinions are 100% my own.

Many CVS locations host a MinuteClinic where you can get quality medical care when your regular doctor isn't open. Right now, you can get a free travel size bottle of sunscreen when you like Minute Clinic on Facebook. This coupon will go public tomorrow, but Making Cents of It readers get the info early because you're just that special. The coupon is while supplies lasts, so don't wait too long.
Your coupon for a FREE travel-size CVS/pharmacy Brand Sunscreen is on the way to your inbox. Redeem it for one 2-oz. travel-size sunscreen at any CVS/pharmacy through Aug. 26.
MinuteClinic provided the following tips for staying safe in the sun. The information below was copied and pasted from the e-mail I received regarding the special offer. Thank you MinuteClinic for sharing this helpful information for staying safe in the sun.
SUMMER SUN SAFETY TIPS, from MinuteClinic
What does SPF mean?
- SPF = Sun Protection Factor, which is a measure of how well sunscreen protects against UVB rays
- It also predicts, in some cases, how long it may take your skin to get sunburn when you are wearing that sunscreen
Under the new FDA sun care guidelines, look for sunscreen products that are:
- Labeled “Broad Spectrum,” which prevents against both UVA and UVB rays (these are the only products that can reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging)
- SPF of at least 15, preferably 30 or 50
- Re-apply every 1.5-2 hours!
- (Note: products will no longer be labeled as “sunblock”, “waterproof” or “sweatproof” since suncreens eventually always wear off)
What’s the difference b/t UVA & UVB rays?
- UVA rays are more responsible for the skin’s aging
- UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn
When it comes to spending time in the sun, remember:
- Sun is strongest between 10 a.m. & 2 p.m., so limit your outside time during those hours
- Some makeup products or prescription medications can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to read labels and take caution
- If you do get burned and feel as though you need medical care, visit your local MinuteClinic for a thorough assessment and treatment. To find a location nearest you, visit www.minuteclinic.com/locations
(Note that sunburn patients with a fever greater than 99.9 degrees, with blistering of greater than 5 cm, and those who are immunocompromised or have diabetes may be referred to another care setting.)

Normally I don't post random coupons that come out of the coupon center at CVS because they're different all the time with no guarantees of what will print for you. This time, I have decided to post the coupon because CVS posted it on their Facebook page.
Scan your extra care card at the coupon center (price checker) at any CVS and a coupon for $4 off $20 will print out for you to use. You must go before Wednesday (July 18, 2012).
Use your $4 coupon to save even more on this weeks sales.
- free - unreal bar ($0.75 extra care rewards)
- $0.88 - 7Up, Canada Dry, AW, and Sunkist 2 liter bottles
- $0.77 - Pepsi, Mountain Dew 2 liter bottles

CVS on Facebook has reached one million fans so to celebrate they're allowing you to select one of four coupons.
- $3 Off $15 in Heath Items
- $3 Off $15 in Beauty Items
- Free 5x7 Print
- $2 Off Any Candy or Beverage
There have been reports of problems redeeming the coupons and I personally experienced a problem as well at the register because the coupon has an error message that the "unique code" was already redeemed. However I hope that CVS is aware of the issue and looking into it already. Request your coupon now, so when the problem fixed you'll be good to go.

If you drink Coke products, you're going to want to stop by CVS this week. Two liter bottles are on sale for $0.79 through July 3, 2012. There is a limit of six bottles per person and a deposit might be required based on where you live.
You might also be interested in their special on water. You can get a 24-pack of 16.9 fl.oz. Just the Basics (CVS' brand) bottles of water for $2.44. That comes out to about $0.79 per gallon of water and it's already portioned out. I don't normally recommend buying the individual bottles but this is really a great price. Just make sure you recycle your empty bottles.

While I can't find this deal posted anywhere on CVS.com or their weekly flier, I did see it today when I stopped by CVS. They currently have a cardboard display advertising Cottonelle Toilet Paper with a designer roll cover for $1.99 with $1.99 back in Extra Care Bucks. The display says limit one, but when I purchased the toilet paper my receipt didn't say I had reached my limit. By the end, I got four free rolls of toilet paper with nice plastic cases.
Cottonelle has been advertising the free designer toilet paper covers with purchase for a while with $1.99 shipping or $2 (plus $1.99) for additional covers. This deal at CVS will give you the case AND a roll of toilet paper for free. The roll cover is a nice plastic case and comes in three designs.
While you're at CVS, make sure you pick up your free Snickers bar this week.
