Free Books to Review and Share

Have you heard of this website Net Galley? I learned about this website on an author's website and it's pretty cool. You don't have to be a blogger to sign up for a free account and request books but the publishers do have the option to approve readers. Some books are available immediately while others have an application to review.

Do you love to spread the word about new books? Do you review and recommend books online, in print, for your bookstore, library patrons, blog readers, or classroom? Then you are what we call a "professional reader," and NetGalley is for you. Registration is free, and allows you to request digital titles to read on your favorite device.

If you have an eReader, or eReader app, this is another great way to get free books. Just remember to post reviews on GoodReads, Twitter, and any other place you can to encourage publishers to continue selecting you for reviews. Start by clicking the "Read Now" menu option which are books available to all members. You can also search for authors you like to see if their newest book is available for request. While most of the review books are digital, some publishers prefer to mail out physical copies of the books so check the listing to determine what type of book you will receive.

Expect more book reviews to be coming your way along with my current movie reviews. I'll be using the same dollar sign rating system but I'll have to modify the categories to fit books.

How to Get Free eBooks

Once you pick up an e-reader, I promise you will love it. I have had my Nook for two years and I never pay for books anymore or have to drive to the library. There are tons of free sources for books. Additionally, eBooks are about to go down in price because there is currently a class action lawsuit against some publishers for working together to keep prices high.

Classic/Out of Copyright Editions - Copyrights don't last forever so when it expires, the books become open property (not the actual legal term). Sites like Amazon, BN, and Google make searching for these free books simple. The only downside is that since no one is making a profit they don't worry about the quality. Many older books were just scanned into a PDF file. If you like to change your font size, bookmark pages, etc. on your reader it won't always be possible. Project Gutenberg is working to collect these classics and currently hosts over 40,000 digital books.

Discover New Authors - Thanks to the digital age, many writers are now releasing their work through self-publishing. Often times they will release a novel for free to get their name out there. You might have heard of one of these self-published works, Fifty Shades of Grey? The author self-published and then a publisher found her that way and re-released her work. Just remember that not every self-published story is going to be good but stick with the free ones and it's not a big deal.

Public Library - More and more public libraries are expanding into the digital realm. My library lends out digital books on a three week cycle. After the three weeks, the file will expire and no longer open.

Lending Communities - Amazon allows you to lend Kindle files you have purchased. A quick Google search shows tons of websites that connect readers with other Kindle owners. Since the book loans are through Amazon and automatically expire after two weeks, there is no risk to lending/borrowing a book.

Swagbucks - If you prefer top sellers without a wait, you can always redeem your Swagbucks for Amazon gift cards. These giftcards can then be used to purchase books for a Kindle.

Free Digital Batman Comic from Barnes & Noble

To celebrate the release of The Dark Knight Rises at midnight, Barnes & Noble has gone a little batty. Right now, you can download a free copy of Batman: Earth One for your Nook.

Available on NOOK devices and apps

  • NOOK Tablet
  • NOOK for Android (Tablet)

Help Keep eBooks in Our Public Libraries

We all know that there was recently a lawsuit against publishers for overpricing their eBooks, but did you know that many are now pulling those same eBooks away from the public libraries?

I just found the following petition on the Free Library of Philadelphia's website and I wanted to pass it along to my readers. Publishers are trying to prevent libraries from lending out eBooks because they think it will hurt their business.

So watch this video clip and sign the petition to keep eBooks in public libraries.

$49 for Kindle After Gift Card at Walmart

It's very rare for large ticket items like the Kindle to go on sale. The manufacturer sets the price and stores can't really lower them. The difference between stores is the promotion that goes with the item. For example, some stores might offer free cases or extra games to get you in the door.

This week, Walmart is promoting the Kindle e-ink. Until May 5, 2012, you can get a $30 Walmart gift card when you purchase a Kindle, (6" E Ink Display). That means that the $79 Kindle will end up being $49 after the gift card. This is one of the best promotions I've seen on a Kindle. It is not available online, so you will have to head out to the store if you want to pick one up.

Amazon Prime Members Can Borrow Free Books

Amazon has released yet another great reason to consider getting a Amazon Prime membership. Kindle Owners’ Lending Library allows you to borrow books for your Kindle at no fee. The only downside is you can only borrow one book a month, however if you already have an Amazon Prime account or feel the other features are worth the value, this is just an extra bonus.

$10 Worth of Free eBooks from Scholastic

This is a great deal for anyone that works with children. Scholastic is currently offering tons of educational eBooks on sale for $1 each. Is that not good enough for you? Use the promotional code 10THANKS at checkout to get up to $10 off. That means you can get $10 worth of eBooks for free. The promotional code expires on September 20, 2011.

Free Books, Music, Movies, and More

This may come as a shock to many of my readers, but there is an amazing place where you can get free books anytime you want. This magical place is called your public library. They still exist and have started going digital. Check your local library to see if they offer eBooks, MP3 audiobooks, and more.

I love the fact that you can take the digital content with you on either an iPod or Nook. It's similar to iTunes rentals which stop working after a set amount of time.  My eBooks are good for 21 days (three weeks) but can always be re-downloaded if needed.

Before buying an eReader, check with your local library. I know that the file type my library offers will work with almost all eReaders but there is one very popular brand which cannot play the files.  I won't say which brand won't work, but I know you've all heard me rave about my Nook and how I can't live without it.

Is it Worth Saving $25?

Amazon announced today their newest Kindle Wireless Reading Device which allows you to save $25 by allowing Amazon to send advertisements to your Kindle. My question to you though, is $25 worth it? I could see if the discount was larger but this doesn't seem like the greatest savings to be bothered by advertisements while you're reading.
